Lee Gardens: A Fabled Destination for Families

A lot of people are noticing that Lee Gardens is hosting more and more family-focused events these days. Tiffany Lam, Hysan’s Director of Marketing and Customer Experience, agrees. “This is absolutely happening,” she says. “The three weekends in March and April proved we did the right thing. The two rugby-related weekends, plus the massive egglette festival during the Easter holidays, were all extremely popular. Did you see the thousands of families having a lot of fun? How about that dinosaur doing the ninja course? If you are a child, you just won’t forget it, ever!”

The CX/HSBC Rugby Sevens FanWalk weekend was indeed something special. Hong Kong Rugby Union and Hysan invited Wolfpack Ninjas, a group of athletes/celebrities from the renowned American Ninja television series, to come to Hong Kong. They set up an obstacle course that ran the entire length of the Lee Garden One driveway, and hundreds of children from age 6 to 16 climbed, jumped and sprinted to hit the winning button and sound the klaxon. It was truly a sight to behold. The Ninjas were true professionals who demonstrated their ninja prowess throughout the weekend. Olivia Vivian, a former Australian Olympic gymnast, was even game enough to don a dinosaur costume to run the course — she got plenty of cheers when she stormed through the course in no time!

The weekend before, everyone stuffed themselves with egg waffles in dozens of gorgeous sweet or savoury flavours. The brilliant goldilocks weather (not too hot, not too cold) ensured families had plenty of time to lounge around and enjoy a variety of musicians showcasing their talents. There were also craft demonstrations and, as we told you in an earlier story, a number of upcycled installation art pieces to enjoy. The massive street artwork that formed part of the StreetMAZE Hunt game was also much appreciated by the crowds, who took lots of selfies and fed their favourite social media to their hearts’ content.

So how do we top all these? Lee Gardens has planned an event that will run over the entire year! We have invited The Absolutely Fabulous Theatre Connection (AFTEC) to host a performance of Aesop’s Fables one weekend per month for the next 12 months here at Lee Gardens Two. Director and performer Michael Sharmon, who took his musical Auditions to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017, wrote up 12 of Aesop’s most-loved stories and given them modern twists that are bound to delight the younger crowds.

“AFTEC’s Aesop’s Fables are interactive,” said Lynn Yau, AFTEC’s CEO. “They are funny, great for all ages, and I never fail to be deeply moved by the characters and the way they offer positive messages to young and old alike”. From Hysan’s perspective, nothing beats seeing children and their parents enjoy their weekend at Lee Gardens, where they can shop, dine, relax and, now, even enjoy regular interactive theatre performances.
