Giant Glowing Puppets on Parade: Standard Chartered Hong Kong X Lee Gardens – The Colour of Music

Attractions

One of Hong Kong’s brightest and most creative giant puppet parades will return to the streets of Lee Gardens on Saturday 14 November as a part of the renowned Standard Chartered Arts in the Park Mardi Gras.

The Standard Chartered Hong Kong X Lee Gardens – The Colour of Music will present “Art Fun in Causeway Bay: Night Parade”, featuring eight gigantic illuminated puppets together with rod puppets and massive glowing costumes created by local professional artists and members of the Lantern Company, an internationally-acclaimed UK-based art group.

The dazzling puppets captured the hearts of thousands when they took to the streets of Lee Gardens for the first time in 2013. Snaking from Lee Garden One through Yun Ping Road, Pak Sha Road and Kai Chiu Road all the way to Hysan Place and then back to the starting point, the puppets simply took the breath away from the five-to-six deep crowd lining the side streets of Causeway Bay.

In 2015, the Mardi Gras theme of “Classical Music and Art” will be highlighted throughout the parade, which will follow a route similar to the first Night Parade. The colourful puppets represent characters in Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade (1001 Arabian Nights), Saint-Saens’s The Carnival of the Animals, Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale and Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. Accompanying the puppets will be the Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation dancers performing a piece choreographed by Kirsten Ho of DANCE Kho.

In addition to the mesmerising Night Parade, other events under the Standard Chartered Hong Kong X Lee Gardens – The Colour of Music banner will encourage our youngsters to enjoy the arts. The afternoons of Saturday 7 November and Sunday 8 November will see creative workshops at Lee Garden Two Kids’ World, where budding artists can learn to make a gorgeous and practical art piece. In the early evening of Saturday 7 November, the up-and-coming group of classical musicians, FLYA, will perform at outdoor areas of Lee Garden One, Hysan Place and Lee Theatre, together with a selection of big puppets. You simply have to bring the family along!

We would like to say a huge thank you to our partners in art — Standard Chartered Bank, the Youth Arts Foundation, and the Hong Kong Government’s Home Affairs Department — for joining us in making this unforgettable event possible.
