Hysan is guided by the principle of being a responsible business. We aim to achieve our business objectives within a framework of high standards that takes account of the needs of our stakeholders, including our impact on the communities in which we operate and the environment.

We pay strong attention to how and in what manner we achieve our results. We undertake actions to truly put our corporate values of being responsible into practice. Hysan's contribution towards the community took a very active turn in 2007. One of the higher profile projects took place during the Christmas holidays. To fulfill its pledge to expand young people's horizons, Hysan sponsored 200 secondary school students from Tin Shui Wai to attend an Arts Tour organised by Chung Ying Theatre on 25 and 26 December 2007. The tour included a guided backstage visit at Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, a workshop to make costumes using household items, and the chance to see Cyrano de Bergerac, as performed by Chung Ying. Throughout the event, students learnt much about the dramatic arts. Plenty of youngsters were inspired to develop further interests in arts and stage performances. Hysan staff also volunteered their time to take part as guides and helpers for this event. They truly showcased Hysan's hands-on spirit when it comes to giving back to the community.

In July 2007, we collaborated with Hong Kong Christian Service to organise a 10-week life skills training named Ethnic Youth Enhancement Scheme (EYES) for a group of minority youths aged between 16 to 21. Apart from providing speakers and counsellors, Hysan invited its corporate friends and top professionals to give talks on interviewing etiquette and skills; workplace communications; basic personal financial knowledge, as well as in-depth discussions on a number of career fields and further education opportunities overseas. EYES was very well received and won the 2007 Best Practice Management Award for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Music in the Green City was another highlight event in 2007. In January, Hysan joined the Wan Chai District Council and District Office, Chung Yung Theatre and Hong Kong Architecture Centre to present this concert-cum-street carnival on Hysan Avenue. The event was a highlight of the Wan Chai Festival, as well as the finale of the Wan Chai Music Festival. Apart from being a local community event, hundreds of school children from Tung Chung and Tin Shiu Wai were also sponsored by Hysan to attend the concert. One added dimension was the enthusiastic volunteer help from Hysan staff members, employees of tenants, and members of the Hong Kong Police. An estimated ten thousand people enjoyed an afternoon of thundering drumbeats and soothing jazz in the green urban environment.

In addition to those community programmes, Hysan's Corporate Volunteer Team also partnered various non-government organisations to organise or take part in a wide range of activities such as Hysan Arts Angel Mural Projects, Walk for Nature @ Mai Po 2007, and Walk at the Peak.
